This exuberant figure of a soprano is immediately recognizable to all devotees of Edward Gorey. The drawing on which this brooch has been adapted is dated 1987 and was one of the many created for the Metropolitan Opera Guild in New York; music and theater being one of Edward Gorey's passions. This brooch is one of a series based on Gorey's theatrical drawings. Sterling silver piece measures approximately 1 1/2" tall x 1 1/4" wide.
Created using the lost wax casting process where a carved or cast wax original is encased in clay or other investment, the wax is melted under temperature and the resulting voids are filled with molten metal. Used since early Egyptian times for casting fine metals where the highest level of detail was required.
