A unique confluence of talent, taste, and history impelled the creation of these very funny cards. The renowned Edward Gorey was a rather extreme (and exceptionally erudite) balletomane with an ear for some of ballet's more absurd titles and conceits. Reproduced here are Gorey's scratchy, minutely crosshatched drawings of famous ballet scenes that never took place; his brief descriptions are straight-faced, dead-on parodies that, like all the best parodies, could well be taken for truth.
